Sony released a new patch for Gran Turismo 5 today and Polyphony Digital has been hard at work. It weighs in at 608MB. Here are the new features along with my impressions:
[Seasonal Events] have been added to the [GT Mode] – [GT Life] screen. From here you can participate in official online events from the Polyphony Digital team.
In these events, all participants are under the same regulations, and if you complete the event you will win rewards and experience. Compete on the leader boards with players around the world, in Time Trials and Drift Trials!
Seasonal Events consists of 3 modes that will get new events from time to time. The first batch will last from today and until January 6th. First there is Bonus Race. This consists of 5 races with more or less specific participation requirements. These are challenging races where you’re likely to find the right car and tune it correctly to even stand a chance at winning. The reward is great though as you get lots of money and experience from them. They work like Special events where you get money for each position once. This prevents farming, it’s still a nice way to get some money. If you finish first, you get the prize money and experience for finishing in all positions down to 6th. The second mode here is Time Trial. No prizes for this, but you get to fight to get on the leaderboard. Finally theirs Drift Trial where you get to show your skills as a drifter. No money here either, but you get to fight for honor on the leaderboards.
Seasonal Events will sure make it interesting to pick this game up time and time again whenever there is some new events. This is a fantastic addition. It gets a plus for adding fresh races to the single player mode, it’s new ways to earn money and experience and last but not least, they are challenging. That is something that can’t be said about most of the A-Spec and B-Spec races.
・Online Collector’s Dealership
An [Online Collector's Dealership] has been added to the left and centre of the [GT Mode]-[GT Life] screen. In here you will find popular and rare cars.
You might just come across that one car you’ve always been looking for, that you haven’t been able to find in the [Used Car Dealership]
This is a great new addition and the new store is unveiled with the most sought after car of them all. The Formula Gran Turismo, which really is the only car you have to look for in the used car dealership is available. Be fast though, because at unspecified intervals, this store will be updated with new cars.
・Online Race Rewards and Experience
When you complete a race in the [Open Lobby] or [My Lounge], you will now gain rewards and experience points.
Even if you are focused more on playing online, you’ll still be able to gain rewards and levels that you need to progress in [GT Life].
This is a no brainer. Without this, you would have to repeat the same races over and over again in A-Spec mode to reach rank 40. Now there’s a bigger incentive for more people to go online and get experience online versus real people as well.
The rewards for winning races in both A-Spec and B-Spec in [GT Mode]-[GT Life] have been increased for a limited time only. (This applies until the end of January 2011)
This is a great chance for those who were previously having difficulties getting ahead in the game, due to a lack of funds for tuning and purchasing required cars.
This is nice I guess. You get to earn more money for a limited time. It would be nice if they increased the experience as well though. At least in B-Spec mode since you can’t get any experience towards that by playing online. Just think about this; It takes 11 24-Hour races to go from B-Spec LV35 to LV40.
・Race Information Display
It is now possible to set the [Race Info Display] in [Start]-[Quick Options]. (You can also set this in [Race Display] in [Options]).
Cleans up the race screen. Nice little detail right there.
・Save Data Backup
You can now copy and restore your save data. For details, please refer to the in-game [Manual].
It’s finally here! I have been afraid of my save file for a long time now, especially after hearing the horror stories of other people getting corrupted save files several times. I have even signed off for the last few days while playing GT5 to make sure the game won’t freeze. I have now backed it up several times on different devices. Nothing can go wrong now. To be able to copy your save file (which is done outside of the game in the XMB), you have to overwrite your save file. You can do so by clicking the save icon on the right bottom side of the GT Life screen. Thank you to Polyphony Digital for listening to the fans.
・User BGM (Menu)
From [Options]-[Hardware]-[Audio Settings], it is now possible to set the [User BGM] (Menu)]. (This can also be set from the [Music Library] within [GT Mode]).
This makes you able to listening to your own music in the menu system as well. Before you could only do that while in a race. Makes it easier to buy all those 1031 cars.
・Car Name Change
The official name of “Red Bull X1″ has been changed to the “Red Bull X2010″.
Not a big deal, but I liked the name as it was. X1 really showed that this was the first car of it’s kind. X2010 seems like it just another version of an on going line of cars.
Other changes that wasn’t in the change log
For everyone that has been grinding races in GT5 (which should be everyone that has gone past LV 21 in A-Spec, should love this one. Now you can start a race again and again without quitting out of it. This will make grinding money more efficient and less frustrating.
All in all, this has been a great update from Polyphony Digital and Sony. It almost feels like a new game with the seasonal objectives and with the possibility of backing up your save game, I can finally sleep well at night. Yes, there has been a lot of patches, but that means they support the game well. Only thing missing now is remote races which should be available early next year.
